Batteries

Any arrangement of two or more cells where stored chemical energy is converted into electrical energy via a redox reaction. Stricly speaking batteries are merely a collection of cells. External terminals allow the battery to be connected into an electrical circuit and thereby provide power to it. The voltage and capacity required determines whether the cells within the battery are connected in series or in parallel.

This category lists all of our battery products and related hardware. With the exception of a few applications such as CMOS/RTC batteries found on many motherboards, which are usually a “primary” disposable alkaline battery, most batteries in the world of IT will be “secondary”. In other words they are built with rechargeable cells. Earlier forms of rechargeable battery used NiCd (nickel cadmium) cells or, later, NiMH (nickel metal hydride). These are both subject to a memory effect when not discharge fully though, limiting the amount of electrical charge that can be held. Later Li-ion (lithium ion) batteries do not suffer from this problem and as a result are now much more widely used than the former.
